I was going to go to bed, but I'm having way too much fun ljing tonight.
nostalgia_lj created her own little wank machine over here, and the funniest things are being said.
Like:
"Stargate is large parts crap, with only the cohesiveness of the cast making it more watchable than Andromeda. And 90% of what the fandom seems to consider canon seems to exist solely in their own heads."
That is so true! Not the Andromeda part "duh!), but the canon in our heads. I don't think that person meant it the way I understood it, but I often thought that Stargate does not have enough canon. Sure, we have plots, sort of, and story lines, and things are happening very other week. But for a show that has run almost eight years, we know amazingly little about the characters. Let's not even speak about all the people that have mysteriously disappeared throughout the years (like Daniel's grandfather, Nyan, MiniJack etc.)
That's what I love about this show, the possibilities for fic are endless, and there are so many different versions of the characters that I like to read about and explore in my head. And none of them contradicts canon! How cool is that?
Btw, I don't get the whole anonymous commenting. I am not searching for the wank, and I really try to stay civil in my comments (sarcasm not withstanding), so there's really no reason not to sign my name.
Damn , I probably jinxed myself with that.
The other thing that comes up quite a lot are BNFs.
Seriously, I never understood the whole BNF thing. When I first came across the term, the only explanation I was given was that it stood for Big Name Fan.
To me, that were/are people that the majority of fandom will recognize, no matter how good they are. For example Destina (on the good site), or Biblio, on the other end of the scale. (IMHO, of course, let's all stay nice and polite here.)
I had no negative or positive association with the term BNF, it was just another word for someone who is fairly well-known.
ThenI learned that BNF are scary people who will make fandom do things against its will, influence the writers of the show, discriminate new fans etc. Bad BNFs.
No cookies for you.
*pauses*
WTF???
There are people who don't dare to unfriend someone because he/she is a BNF??? In their own lj? Their liveJOURNAL. (notive how I emphasized the journal righ there? Yes, that's right, it's something personal, you get to chose who reads yours and who doesn't)
What are they afraid that's going to happen if they do?
Will the fandom sky will fall down on them, the masses come running and stamp their lj into the ground?
I know it sounds strange coming from someone who spends so much time in fandom, and I mean it in the nicest possible way, but seriously?
You might start thinking about leaving the house again some time soon. Talk to real people. Stay away from the twinkies, they are bad for you.
How does one become a BNF? Do they get up one day, receive their hundredth piece of feedback, and decide, Now I'm a big name fan, come to me my minions, for I shall make you do things and will from now on rule the world?
I'm seriously sorry for those of you who have to worry about these things. It sure is more fun to be an unknown little fan.
Though I'd kinda like the minions, they sound very useful.
*g*
Btw, in the above mentioned thread, I found this definition of a BNF:
" If you write mpreg-incest-Charlie Brown / Big Bird fic, will they love it? Then you're a BNF."
*laughs*
You know, i'd totally read this, coming from a so-called BNF or not. Cause I'm a pervert, and I'm going to hell anyway. ;-)
katie_m? If you are looking for the wanky side of lj fandom, that's where you'll find it.
And just in case you are wondering: no, I didn't post anything anonymous over there. I like fandom, and I even like that part of fandom sometimes. It doesn't make me angry, though there are some things that make me shake my head in disbelief and the nagging suspicion that mankind is doomed.
But my life is way too real for me to get seriously angry about these things. And if something does annoy me, you'll read about it here.
(okay, I admit, it's all about the icons. Anon comments won't let you use the icons.)
*gets all angry and worked up about not being able to use icons anonymously*
