I am still unable to commit to rewatching another tv show, and so I'm watching yet more movies. Here's what I've been watching in the last two weeks (one week of which I spent in a wonderful, spring-filled Paris. Oh Europe, I love you so.)

Four more unspeakable movie with Michael Dudikoff (Stranded, Cyberjack, Fugitive Mind, Bounty Hunters II) )

Taking Chance )

The Princess Bride )

Black Hawk Down )

Jarhead )

Tears of the Sun )

A Knight's Tale )

Young Guns )

Next up: The Hurt Locker, Fly Away Home, Dogma, Mystic River and Snow Cake.

(and there are more unopened and unwatched movies in my collection. Damn, when did I buy all of those?)

I've also been rereading a lot of Jack/Daniel fiction and am strongly leaning towards rewatching all of Stargate, but I don't think I'm quite ready yet. Sometime this year, though.

I am watching The Mentalist, or rather, I have watched The Mentalist (yes, all of it), and, well, Simon Baker... need I say more?
(I only have a Smith-icon of him. Remember Smith?

*has a moment of silence for Smith, which she still misses like crazy*

Anyway, The Mentalist. I kinda really like the show. So, this morning, when I turned on the computer in an attempt to delay doing last night's dishes (which I should have done last night, but - as I mentioned - I was watching The Mentalist), I though I could read some Mentalist fic. Gen, het, slash, whatever. Since I couldn't remember anyone on my flist reccing The Mentalist (but then, I miss a lot these days), my first stop was of course [livejournal.com profile] crack_van. There are is exactly ONE Mentalist rec on [livejournal.com profile] crack_van, and that's a crossover with a comic fandom that I have never heard of before!

*is disappointed*

I'm taking my chances with google now, but if anyone has any Mentalist recs (as I said, I miss a lot these days), or knows where I could find some, I'd appreciate it.
In celebration of me finally updating [livejournal.com profile] oceanas_recs (after almost six months, hides in shame) (don't get too excited, only four new recs so far), you can request recommendations over here.

Meanwhile, in real life (*laughs herself silly*), I am watching Mark Harmon's 'And Never Let Her Go'. God, he is such a creep in that movie (and OMG so good at it). I think I need therapy, because he still turns me on like crazy. I hope this will end by the end of the movie. Otherwise I will just have to watch Prince of Bel Air again, because he couldn't get more harmless and still hot than that. Okay, he is a bit of a bastard in that movie as well, but it's not Gibbs if he is nice. (raise your hand if that made sense to you)

We interrupt the football celebrations for a quick service announcement

I'd like to draw your attention to the fact that for the past three days I've been reccing music vids over at [livejournal.com profile] oceanas_recs. Yep, that's right, back from the dead. I get up at 6 a.m. to have half an hour to watch and rec vids for you (and me). Don't say I never do anything for you!

I've also finally dared to take a look into my recs folder, and look, I have 114 fourteen unposted recs saved, some of them dating back to 2006! Where to start?

Tell me, from my list of old recs, which fandom would you like to see most?

[Poll #1211111]

ETA: Looks at poll results so far: let me remind you: these are old recs, you might already know the stories. Not even I can conjur good new NCIS fiction out of thin air. I wish I could, though.)

This is hopefully the first in a series of posts that could all be titled "Things I meant to post in 2007, but didn't". This one's subject is

Communities I enjoyed in 2007

Let's start with [livejournal.com profile] daily_puppy, because it definitely was one of my favourite picture communities of the year. PUPPIES! Every day! Yes, sometimes the comments of the owners make me want to throw things at them, but there is no way a flist cannot be made a better place by adding a puppy a day. Also, in contrast to [livejournal.com profile] bentolunch (I blame [livejournal.com profile] raqs), [livejournal.com profile] daily_puppy is manageable, since there is only ONE puppy per day, compared to countless bento lunches. I love [livejournal.com profile] bentolunch, but I had to create a special filter for it which I only look at once a week or so. As much as I like looking at other people's bentos, I don't want them appearing between JD slash and Jensen ackles pictures, and whatever else my flist was posting last year.

Not quite as manageable as [livejournal.com profile] daily_puppy but nonetheless on my regular flist is [livejournal.com profile] in_my_purse. This is where people post pictures of their purse and its contents. In other words, Purse!Porn. Of course, Purse!Porn goes much better with the usual themes on my flist. Speaking of porn, this list would not be complete without [livejournal.com profile] j2_daily. Which needs no further introduction, me thinks.

On the less sexual entertainment front, there is of course [livejournal.com profile] peanutsdaily and the provoking, often cruel and always intelligent [livejournal.com profile] softerworldfeed. And [livejournal.com profile] ng_photo, stunning pictures that didn't make it into National Geographic articles, because apparently they have a limit on how many stunning pictures they can post. Which is why they post the rest on LJ.

And then there is a German community that I love: [livejournal.com profile] kochkinder, a cooking community with friendly people, good recipes and researches. Most of the English speaking cooking communities were too busy for me, so [livejournal.com profile] kochkinder is perfect.

Miss the fannish communities? There are so many I watch and enjoy that I don't even want to try to describe which ones I liked why. Just a few will get a special mention:

First of all, [livejournal.com profile] sg1_debrief, which I could not live without and which is definitely the best of all the fandom newsletters I subscribe to. A HUGE thank you to the editors which do an incredible job of collecting, editing and posting EVERYTHING that goes on in LJ SG fandom, thus making every second Thursday a Stargate party. I love it even more for being SG-1 only, because as much as I like SGA, they are two DIFFERENT fandoms and two different shows, and when I'm loooking for the one I'm not looking for the other (and I'm looking for The One a lot more often than for the other, as indicated by the totally intentional wording used in this sentence.)

Other honorary mentions: [livejournal.com profile] sg1_five_things, which isn't as popular as it used to be, but still fun to read (and one of these days I will become inspired, right?), [livejournal.com profile] sg_one_a_days, with one SG picture every day to remind us of ten wonderful years and last, and least, [livejournal.com profile] unit_command , where nothing (much) happens, but it's The Unit, which was incredible this season and last season, and it's the only Unit community with any kind of activity at all.

I hope you enjoy one or more of these communities as much as I did. And feel free to pimp in return...communities, feeds, lj users, whatever rocks your boat.
Well, that was completely pointless. Except for the doubtful pleasure of watching Mulder drive a Porsche and have lots of sex. Which wasn't as much fun as I thought it would be.

And then the glasses in the very first scene? Which made him look exactly like one of the what-were-they-called-again? in Space 2063.
Which is out on DVD, btw. But I'm already over my monthly DVD-buying limit.

Right, back to Californication.
Despite the Porsche I don't think I'm going to bother with it again.
Also, worst wineglasses ever. The props guy needs to be shot.

P.S.: [livejournal.com profile] oceanas_recs has been revived! Ten new recs are up, and I'll try (not promise) to get back to my weekly reccing from now on. Hope you enjoy (most of them are really old, but worth rereading)

Rewatching season 1 has me high on Stargate love. I didn't know it was possible to still love them all so much after all this time, but it is. And since fandom is all about sharing the love, I thought I'd do some sharing of my own and rec you one of my favourite Daniel Jackson videos:

Let it be me by Carol S.

This vid is about Daniel fighting the good and the right, and yes, I know you all hate Saint Daniel, but you can't deny that he was always willing to give his life for his belief in the good, to save others, to save earth. And this Daniel, the one who believes in something worth fighting for and often that something is not fighting at all, that's the Daniel you'll see in this vid. I can't even describe what watching this Daniel does to me, all I can say is that I love him very very much.

Technically, I'd have to say that this is a gen vid, but if I can't help loving this Daniel like a mad loving person, then how can Jack not love this Daniel? Yes, the happy slasher in me sees Jack/Daniel love in the pure existence of Daniel, because there is no not loving Daniel. Just ask Jack.

Oh, I love them so much!
*loves*
*goes off to watch more Stargate vids*
'The Torment of Tantalus'

One of the more famous season 1 episode, on which quite a number of good fics are based. It starts with a great Jack/Daniel tradition: Jack is trying to get Daniel, who is obssessed with work, away from his desk. Only this time it's not really Daniel's desk, but the briefing room. No, I have no idea why he watches the video of Ernest traveling through the gate 50 years ago in the briefing room and not in his office, but I assume it is because a) they hadn't built an office for him yet, and b) there was no VCR in the non-existing office.

Anyway, Jack is clearly worried. "How many hours of this stuff have you looked at?" And then he gives him a very small, short punch on the shoulder, but first he punches the chair, as if he is trying to hold back and then reconsiders because clearly touchingDaniel's shoulder would not mean anything to anyone except to Jack himself, and not touching him would look as if he was trying not to touch him, and that would be suspicious.
Me, I think that Jack coplicated things too much for himself there. Good thing he becomes more comfortable with touching Daniel later. A LOT more comfortable.;-)

When Daniel sees that they managed to turn on the gate back then, he is completely baffled: "WHY? Why would they stop their research if they had actually managed to turn it on?"
He just doesn't understand how they could not have want to know more, not have wanted to find out everything they could about the gate and where it leads. It's a very nice opening for the episode.

The rest is history: they survive, Daniel is a bit heartbroken because he can't go back and Jack and Daniel stand way way too close when they watch Catherine and Ernest hug in the end.

Last but not least: have some Torment of Tantalus fic:
Destina's wonderful "A Heart For Every Fate"
Graculus AU "Journey's End", in which Jack and Daniel go through the gate in the fourties, and not Ernest.
(I could have sworn I read more Torment of Tantalus fic than that, but these are the only two that I remember right now.)
Lessons in Vision (Heroes)
Isaak painting. And losing his mind in visions and drugs. Reads like a drug trip (I suppose), reality and visions mix nicely.

Vera (The Hunt for Red October Movie)
Given that it's been years since I've watched the movie and more years since I read the book, the story worked amazingly well for me. It's a story about the two russian offficer Ramius and Vasily. There's a wonderful desire woven through the story, desire for freedom, Johnny Cash and Montana. Slash, but neither pre nor UST. Just a man wanting what he always wanted, so used to hiding it that you almost can't tell, but it's there all the time. And for me that's exactly the right amount of slash, everything else would have been too much.

Real Life (Heroes)
Claire, after their existence is revealed to the world. I've stopped watching Heroes, so I don't know how much of this is canon, but Claire was pretty much the only one I was still interested in at the end, and I think she is very well written in this littl fic, that I enjoyed a lot.

Into the Black (Heroes)
Nathan can't fly. But Nathan is the other character in Heroes that I'm interested in, so I really don't care if he can fly or not. Short with an interesting point that the show, at least as long as I watched it, never cared about.

Five, er, Six Reports Nathan Stark Wishes Never Crossed His Desk (Eureka)
Six events that I'd all liked to read more about, in the same light and warm tone that makes Eureka so much fun to watch.

Protest Song (Miami Vice)
OMG it's MIAMI VICE fic! I LOVE Miami Vice. And not only is it MV fic, it's good MV fic. Sonny fic, Sonny and Miami and Rico. I don't really have anything intelligent to say about this fic, only that I really really liked this look at Sonny, and OMG MIAMI VICE fic!

Of Mice and Myth (Douglas Adams - Long Dark Teatime of the Soul)
The mice decide that the Gods have to go. It's not like they were ever a part of the program, and not even the Vogons have a form for applying to exist on a plane of belief. True Adams absurdity.

Deep With the First Dead Lies London's Daughter (Torchwood)
Interesting story about the first time Ianto meets Jack in the aftermath of the Battle of Canary Wharf. Excellent Ianto characterization, always correct and looking for order in the chaos.

The Night if Darker Now (Torchwood)
Another Ianto fic, this one Ianto/Jack. Ianto, who has nothing left to lose and nowhere to go, is a wonderful and sad contrast to Jack, who is trying to do the best he can with what he has left.

Rose and Thistle (BSG 2003 RPF)
Yes, I read BSG RPF. Quite a lot of it,actually, so I know a good one when I see it. This one is quite good. It's Jamie, who can't stop sleeping around with his co-stars, and it has exactly the angsty, sexy, fucked up, never going to happen but so much fun to read feeling that good RPF should have in my opinion.

Now I'm off to watch Torchwood, and then more Yuletide! You know, you can tell people are not in fandom when they complain about christmas coming sooner every year... ;-)
Promised long ago, and now it's finally done!

Ten new recs at [livejournal.com profile] oceanas_recs, three vids, three Harry Potter, four Stargate. I'm also happy to say that we are getting close to the long-awaited "Twenty Vids in Twenty Fandoms". In fact, the recs are all written up, now I just need to get organized and find links. And time to post. But I'll get there one of these days.

If there is anyone on my flist who is reading Numb3rs fic that ISN'T incest, could they please give me some recs, or point me to recs sites, or maybe just to a good Numb3rs fanfiction archive? I'd greatly appreciate it.

I'm really looking for every good Numb3rs fic that isn't Don/Charlie. Gen, het, slash, everything is fine. I've read most of Miriam Heddy's Larry/Charlie fics and the three good Charlie/Colby fics there are. I read every pairing except for Don/Charlie (or Don or Charlie with Alan, please tell me that doesn't exist), but my weaknesses are Charlie/Colby, Don/Amita and every fic in which Edgerton isn't a cruel and sadistic bastard. I'd also love to read Don/Larry, if it exists, and long and angsty gen fics would make me very very happy.

Please? There must be someone out there who reads and writes non-cest Numb3rs fic? If it isn't you, maybe someone on your flist?

I love reccing. I consider every fanfic I read for reccing and I love sitting down, reading slash all afternoon and writing my recs. It takes some time, but it's not what I'd consider work, and as a reader, writing recommendations is the least I can do to give fandom back some of the joy it brings me. But yes, it takes time. For ten stories that I rec, I read appr. 70-80 stories that suck. In some fandoms less, in some fandoms LOTS more (I'm looking at you, NCIS). And that's only when I know what to look for. If I have to work my way through the archives, the ratio increases. Because of my limited time, my recs are sometimes a bit older, but that gives people the chance to read things they missed the first time around. I write my recs for everyone and I hope everyone enjoys them and finds something they like to read.

However, if I find several of the old stories of my last set of recs recced by someone else on their recs site, shortly after I posted them, I start to think. What are the chances that you have read the same five old stories, some more than a year old, at the same time I read and decided to rec them? Could it be that you read my recs? Oh yes, I think that's a given.

Of course, I'm happy you liked them. I'm even more happy you decided to rec them and spread the joy. However, since you are a person who thinks they are very special, you do not friend back normal, low-life fans like me in your exclusive reading list, and you have so far not responded to a single comment I left in your lj, things like "Thanks for your recs", which I post sometimes when people rec things I like. Or to other people's comments.

And since you are that kind of person, I'd appreciate if you left a comment next time you rec everything I rec. Just a little "Thanks for the recs." You know, normal human behaviour here in this place called fandom. No need to give credit or anything, it's not like I wrote those stories. But finding them can take time too, and reccers, like writers can be delicate flowers. Really, I wouldn't have said anything if you weren't who you are.

No, I don't feel the need to flock this post. I doubt you read it, since we are not on our respective reading lists. And if you do, all the better, then you know what I think about your behaviour.

That said, there are ten new old recs up at [livejournal.com profile] oceanas_recs, NCIS and SGA, plus two vids. Feel free to rec exactly the same stories wherever you want, the more publicity for the authors, the better. Well, don't post them in New York Times without permission. If you do and you are a nice person, you'll drop me a short "Thank you for finding these stories."

Enjoy.

For a long time I knew that my 500th recommendation at [livejournal.com profile] oceanas_recs was coming up. I decided to celebrate with 20 Vids in 20 Fandoms and watched vids like a crazy vidwatching person.

Now I admit my defeat. Oh, there will be 20 Vids In 20 Fandoms, one of these days. But not today. Today, I'm celebrating my 500th recommendation with the fandom that started it all (at least here on lj):

Twenty new and old Stargate recommendations are up on [livejournal.com profile] oceanas_recs, which brings us to 500 recs in 30 fandoms!

Enjoy!

As you all know, because I whined and complained about it often enough, I didn't have time to read much fanfic during the last year. If I did have time, I read mostly Stargate and NCIS (there was also a relapse into the Snape/Harry addiction, but let's not talk about this now). Fics in other fandoms I saved to my harddrive to read some other time.

Except for SGA. I have about a ton of SGA fic from the last year and before saved to my HD, but there was so much popping up on my flist, wither written or as recs, that I couldn't save it all. I barely saved 10% of the things that I thought I'd want to read. So now I'm on myway through these ten percent and am mostly disappointed. Especially the John/Rodney fics that I picked up somewhere along the way wereoften too shallow for my taste: some bitching by McKay, some showing off that John really is smart, standard "gay, not gay" issues, sex. Of course, there are some brilliant fics as well, but compared to Stargate, it's maybe 50% of what I have saved on my HD (compared to NCIS it's at least 800%, but that's another matter altogether.)

So I'm thinking, maybe I saved the wrong 10%. Maybe I missed 90% of the brilliant fics that were posted last year. Wouldn't that be a shame? Which is where you come in:

Rec me your favourite SGA fic(s) from last year, the ones I really have to read.

If the fic you want to rec has been mentioned before, please choose another, or you'll all end up reccing Retrogrades or MVP or some of the other things that even I couldn't miss. Or point me to your recs list or tags. I'm looking for all kinds of recs. I really don't care much about pairings or genre in SGA, so rec your happy little hearts out (and don't forget to feed my McShep and Sheppard/Ronon love). As always, I'm easy, you don't have to go though the trouble of finding the links (though I appreciate it), just title and author is fine. Yes girls, I can google. ;-)

But most of all: rec me Teyla fic. Het, slash, gen, I don't care, as long as it's good.

Come on, I know how much you all like to talk about SGA, it's despite my lack of involvement in the fandom what appears most on my flist, so here's your chance to reminisce in last year's SGA goodness and show how much love you really have for your fandom (=how much reading you did). And send your friends, too. ;-)

Thanks in advance!

P.S.: Feel free to rec great music vids and other stuff I might have missed too. I really feel as if I have been neglecting this fandom for way too long.
Some fandoms, like Stargate and Farscape, seem to have more vids than any sane person could ever watch, and a lot of them are amazingly good. Other fandoms, like NCIS, don't seem to have any vids. Okay, NCIS has a few but there is no real NCIS vidding fandom.

So I need your help.

Have you vidded any of the following fandoms?
Have you seen vids in any of the following fandoms (I don't care if they are good or bad,)?
Do you know anyone who has vidded these fandoms (I don't need an exact link, I can find that myself)?
Do you know any multifandom vid archives, groups or communities where I could ask or search for these vids?
Have you heard a distant rumour that the cousin of your ex-best friends' grandmother's cleaning lady has ever made a vid in one of these fandoms?

Please let me know. Please.

The fandoms I am talking about are the following:

- NCIS
- Dark Angel
- West Wing
- CSI (LV and Miami)
- Miami Vice (come on, there are DVDs now, someone must have abused 80s songs to celebrate the DVD release)
- Harry Potter (I know there are vids, but I don't know where to find them)
- Numb3rs (need MORE)
- Oz
- The Unit
- Remington Steele
- Rome
- Andromeda
- Space: Above and Beyond
- The A-Team
- Magnificent Seven
- any other rare fandom vids that you think I would or should want to see

In case of super-sekrit (i.e. not to be named in public ljs), vids sites, please send me an email at oceana2602 @ gmail.com.

The best vids will be recced (even though that may take a while), so there is something in this for everyone.

In my neverending greed for more icons, I have changed [livejournal.com profile] oceanas_recs to the new supported account type. When I'm logged in over there, I can see the advertisements, but as [livejournal.com profile] oceana_ I can't, so it doesn't bother me much. What does bother me a little bit is that I'm against the new account type (O-tone lj :"there will never be advertisements on the site"). Still, more icons.
*greed*

So here's your chance to tell me your opinion:

[Poll #728291]

P.S.: This is really really not me begging for a paid account. I wouldn't know what to do with a paid account at my recs lj. Not only do I not update often enough to merit spending money on it, I also don't rec in 50 fandoms (yet), so the icony goodness would be pretty much lost on me.

I finally updated [livejournal.com profile] oceanas_recs again. I apologize for the seven weeks break

15 news recs in a bunch of fandoms, most of the NCIS. Nothing too new, you know me. I rec the things you've missed before. (or rather, I read everything a bit late).

I'm still working on my 20 vids in 20 fandoms recs, which will probably be done next year. Sometimes this summer, I mean. ;-)
