Moonlight entered the lj scene when I was on hiatus caused by
internetlessness. I saw the excited squeeing beforehand, then the
squeeing got less. And less. And some people said it sucked.

Still, there seem to be some brave fan out there who still watch the
show, and, my friends who are among them, let it be known that I'm going to join you.

Moonlight, I'm sorry to say this, Moonlight is not a good show.
Judging from the pilot, it's not a good show.

It's all been done before, more than done before. It's probably been
done better. I mean, I don't watch a vampire show expecting to get
something completely new and exciting, but there doesn't seem to be
much that is new and exciting at all. Also, there are game faces, and
growly noises, which, okay they are vampires, but I really can't be
the only one who always had to giggle when Angel put on his game face
(unlike Spike, who always seemed like the angry clown with his game
face, and I'm afraid of clowns. It also made him kind of cute.)

I'm not saying that Moonlight is a bad show, it's just not outstanding
in any way.

However, Moonlight could suck more than a whole horde of vampires (oh,
this just lends itself to bad ouns, I cannot help it), I would still
watch it. And love it. (let's hope it stays that way, or I'd have
judged too soon)

It has Jason Doering (that's not how his name is spelled, is it?). He
is old and has money and he is totally inconvincing when you've come
to love him when he played a teenage boy, but I have the feeling that
I will be convinced by him, no matter what. Because he seems to be
having fun, and he likes to lick people's blood, and I'm sure there
are all kinds of fun things he could do to Mick, so I'll stick around
until he does them.

There's Mick, who is a do--gooder, which I don't usually like, only
that a) I like to see them fail (and I have the feeling that there
will be a lot of that) and b) I don't believe one word of him being a
good guy. That scene in the beginning, when he is in that interview
(and what was that all about?), where he says "I don't bite people
unless they really want me to." He acts as if it supposed to be a
joke, but there's a desire underneath his words, you can tell how much
he wants to, how he longs for blood. For humans.

It's very tempting.

And then there is the fact that it's not a good show. Because it is
not a good show in the way that most 80s shows are not good shows in
hindsight. It seems old-fashioned somehow, it has a very different
look from the dark and shiny Heroes, or (incredibly oh so pretty I
love this show so much) Supernatural, or the ever perfect, fast and
wonderful NCIS.

Moonlight seems to move a bit slower, the special effects are less
clinical. It even uses inappropriate music (Evanescence in a vampire
show? Who thought that would be a good idea???), which almost reminds
me of the unforgettable Phil Collins-by night drive of Sonny Crockett.

To me, Moonlight seems like an eighties show that I've always known
and loved, and now I watche it again twenty years later and I see all
its weaknesses but I really really don't care, because I'd love it no
matter what.

Does that make sense to anyone?

So, from the two new shows I tried this week, Moonlight is definitely
The One. I'll also give Burn Notice a chance, but only because I'm
curious. Moonlight kind of owns me already. Let's hope it stays that
way.

P.S.: I'd also like to draw your attention to the fact that I posted
four days in a row, and I did not whine about work (much), but rather
there was actual fannish content. Aren't you proud of me?
