Sci-Fi channel announces "Aliens made us do it!"
Officials from sci-fi channel have just announced that their hit series "Stargate SG-1" is going to be renewed for a tenth season.
"We tried to stop the show after the fourth season, but the aliens wouldn't let us." says a network official who prefers to remain unknown. "You can make a show about traveling to other planets, and people love it, but if they hear how the aliens pressure us into renewing Stargate every year, they'll think we are crazy."
The aliens in question appear to be huge fans, who have even taken to writing stories in the early seasons. "One of them loved the Jack/Sam dynamic, so we had to play with that for a bit, until they realized that Jack/Sam really doesn't work well on-screen. "
Stargate character Sam Carter, played by the wonderful Amanda Tapping, is an idol off-world. After the attempts to bring together her and Colonel O'Neill - former MacGyver Richard Dean Anderson - failed, the aliens created a unique love interest for her - Pete Shanahan.
"We couldn't very well write 'alien clone' on the cast list, so we told everyone that he was my brother." remembers director Peter DeLuise. Peter DeLuise's father had been on the show in season 3, so the fans were quick to believe the lie, but Pete Shanahan turned out to be too human for Sam, who ditched him when he tried to buy her a house.
"I was glad when the network decided I could break up with Pete. I don't mean to be racist, but it was weird working with an alien clone. Especially one made for me. But yes, he was kind of cute." says Amanda Tapping with a smile on her face. Pete is gone from the show, but the channel did not release information about the clone's whereabouts. "I'm really not allowed to tell you," says Tapping. "Just one thing: he is still on earth."
The tenth season will likely see the return of the regular cast, minus Richard Dean Anderson, whom the aliens finally let go last year. A decision that cost the network dearly: "I cannot give you details, but yes, we have been obligated to cast every actor who has ever been in a sci-fi show during the last years. We call it out little sci-fi actor collection, but it did raise production costs enormously." confirms producer Wright.
With the stretched budget, it is no wonder that the producers jumped the aliens offer to send the cast of Stargate spin-off "SG: Atlantis" to another galaxy. The spin-off is going for a third season now, with no end in sight. Wright: "The aliens take care of everything, and the actors are thrilled to film in space. There were some incidents that had us concerned, but the low cost is worth the risk of filming off-world. We just hope the stars don't get turned into penguins again."
Next seasons of Stargate and Stargate Atlantis are expected to premiere in summer 2006.
