Stargate 8x10 Endgame
I finally watched Endgame.
I was a bit afraid of this ep, summer finale etc. Bad things could happen, and I'd have to live with them until the next ep. (which is when, btw?) So it took me a while until I found the courage to watch "Endgame".
Summary:
Could they get married already?
If I ever hear someone complain about the lack of J/D in season 8 again, I'm going to hit them over the head with my Stargate DVD collection. People should WATCH the damn ep instead of complaining.
Endgame?
Classical J/D subtext ep.
But let's start from the beginning.
Funny chevron guy scene, hints of evil Daniel ("You went to get coffee???"). Heh. Then we get Jack and Daniel standing in the briefing room looking at the empty gate room.
Daniel:"I'd hate to be the guy who has to explain this to the president."
*exchange of looks*
Sam (in the background): "Sir!"
Analysis:
Jack and Daniel are prominent in the foreground. The viewer doesn't notice Sam at first. Daniel teases Jack about having to tell the President. They are obviously at ease with each other even in a situation like this. The look they aexchange speaks for itself. Then, in contrast, we hear Sam saying the formal "Sir!" from the background. Jack and Daniel turn towards her at the same moment, they are very in sync. Sam seems to be the odd one out in this scene.
it's really rather obvious.
They talk about the possibility that Baal did this, and Jack gets that look in his face. Hurts me to look at him and see him remember. He reacts very harsh to Sam's analysis of the situation and the mentioning of Baal, and he even snaps at Sam. A bit too harsh, in my opinion, Sam didn't deserve that. But the not very friendly look he gives Daniel the next moment explains Jack's reaction: Obviously, Jack still isn't ready to talk about what happened with Ba'al. Either Daniel knows, but chooses to wait until Jack starts talking by himself, or Daniel still doesn't know that Jack saw him an "Abyss", and Jack can't help but judge him for that. He really needs to get over that and talk to Daniel. Snapping at Sam isn't the right way of dealing with this.
Things happen.
The mysterious Trust is involved. I really don't like this Trust, and I hope it's the last we heard of it. reminds me too much fo XF conspiracies, and I was never interested in those either.
Also, I find it highly unlikely that someone could install a tracking beacon in the gate without being noticed, but I can accept it for the sake of the plot.
Cut to rebel jaffa and Teal'c. Oh, they are all dead. Now that sucks, doesn't it? I wonder why the Jaffa rebellion doesn't inspire more fiction. It should be really fascinating. but we don't get to know any of the rebels, they rae all kind of faceless. and I guess nobody wants to writer about lots and lots of OCs. But I find the whole story behind the Jaffa and their rebellion fascinating. They should give Teal'c his own spin-off when they series ends and Jack and Daniel retire to Minnesota. I'd watch it.
Back on earth, invading some warehouse. Now, should Sam and Daniel really be in the first line of this expedition? Shouldn't those soldiers at least clear the room until Sam and Danile enter? The cops do that for the CSI all the time, and they are replacable. Daniel and Sam are a bit more important to earth than Grissom or Caine, right? But at least they made Sam and Daniel wear jeans. Weird, but nice. Should have given us more butt shots, though. *is shallow*
BTW, did Sam lose weight? Her face doesn't look as round anymore.
Blue gas containers, Sam knows what's in them immediately. Hm. There must have been labels.
Cut to more dead Jaffa. *finally buys a clue*
Alphasite: You can tell that they are slowly running out of budget. This has got to be the ep with the worst supporting actors ever. Let's take Colonel Pierce from the Alphasite. He obviously never had any kind of military training, or he would have learned to stand still and stop fidgeting. Instead, he tried to be all cool, and it really didn't convince me. Just because Jack can do cool, doesn't mean some AlphaSite Colonel can. Jack on the other hand shows his military background in every movement. He slouches, but never in posture, just in his attitude, language and his hands. His back and shoulders are always straight. He never makes me doubt that he is military.
Colonel Pierce? Not so much.
Next bad b-actor: the doctor guy from Area 51. Did anyone doubt for a moment that he was the bad guy? No? Didn't think so.
Meeting in the street, Sam gets beamed up. Wow, that was obvious.
Daniel gets to interview that unconvincing doctor guy. Daniel also got to interview chevron guy (=Walter, I remembered his name) in the beginning. You'd think he had other things to do, but he seems to enjoy his new role. Sleeping with the General sure does have its advantages.
So Daniel interviews the doc and promises to overlook the two million the "Trust" paid him. Hmm. I don't believe him. They are willing to let the guy go with his 2 million if they could get him for treason? I don't think so.
What if Daniel was making false promises? Daniel, who questioned Hammond in "The Other Side" if helping the Ferral's people was "The right thing to do", is willing to make false promises in order to save Sam, instead of trying to convince the guy to do the right thing and talk.
That's interesting.
But back to J/D. Notice how we don't see Jack's reaction to Sam's disappearance? This doesn't prove J/D, but it tells us something about the ship. If they had wanted to say something about Jack/Sam, they would have done it in this ep. They didn't.
On the other hand, we got an awful lot of Sam/Daniel. *imagines fandom's reaction if they Surprise! made Sam/Daniel canon*
Heh, now that would leave us all united in our speechlessness. ;-)
Totally unrelated: I LOVE the Prometheus. She's such a cool ship. How cool would it be if earth really had that kind of technology?
Back to Osiris ship, with Sam and the bad guys on board. The bad guys prepare for another rocket launch.
Oceana: "Oh, that's what they needed the gate for!"
Boy, am I being slow today or did anyone else not get that before?
Cut back to SGC:
Daniel! Straps! *fangirls*
And did you see his look when he bent down to fasten the straps? I'm just saying.... *looks perfectly innocent*
and then they flirted in the control room in front of everyone else...
Jack asks Daniel why he shoudl allow him to go. Clearly, Jack is worried (about Daniel, not about Sam. He hasn't asked for poor Sam once.) Jack is not a happy camper, and explains to Daniel that just because he doesn't have a better idea, this one still isn't a good one.
Daniel:" Now, where did I learn that from?"
If that isn't flirting, then I don't know what it is. Jack is worrid, Daniel is set on going. They obviously had that discussion before, and Daniel doesn't take Jack serious, because he doesn't want to fight about this again.
but before he goes, he says: "See you soon." to Jack, to show him that he understands Jack's worries. It's almost like saying "I love you", but I guess we won't get that until the season finale.
Jack was more afraid to lose Daniel than to lose Sam, and the possibility to rescue her. Poor Sam.
Daniel gets beamed up, some fighting, Sam should have considered a career in soccer if she can kick like that. And then Teal'c arrives through the gate and does the cutest thing: He says "This isTeal'c of SG-1."
*smiles*
*loves Teal'c*
I don't get it though: why doesn't Daniel contact the Prometheus immediately after the fight? And why was the Prometheus preparing to destroy Osiris's ship? They were willing to destroy the gate? Huh?
But I shouldn't worry, since they saved everyone including the gate. Who'd have thought? ;-)
Jack's decision to wait for SG-1 to come through was the right decision after all. He still trusts his team. But you can see that he can't take much more of this. He lets his feelings for his team cloud his judgement. If SG-1 hadn't made it, it would have been too late to order the destruction of the ship. That's not like Jack at all.
And then it happens:
Daniel: "In retrospect, maybe you should have destroyed the ship when you had the chance."
Jack: "Yeah. Tough choice."
*is speechless*
Tough choice, he says, and walks off. And leaves Teal'c and Sam looking confused at Daniel, while Daniel tries to pretend that he doesn't understand Jack's reaction either. Is Daniel really so clueless? Can't he see how much Jack loves him, that it would destroy Jack to lose Daniel again?
Cause that's what this was about: Jack not being able to lose Daniel another time. If it had been just this scene, it wouldn't have been so obvious. But in combination with Jack's attempts to keep Daniel from getting beamed up to Osiris's ship, it becomes obvious what this scene is about.
And Sam's and Teal'c's reactions make it even more obvious: there was no reason for them to be confused and to look at Daniel for an explanation: they should have known what Jack was saying. Someone (i.e. the director) must have told them to react like that, showing that the exchange was about primarily about Jack and Daniel.
Because Jack loves Daniel, and he cannot let him go.
*happy sigh*
This is it, my view of the episode Endgame. You are welcome to disagree with everything I said about J/D, but I'll choose to ignore you.
