I need to talk more about The Magnificent Seven. They make me happy. I'm watching DVDs of one TV show or another almost constantly (last that I finished was Riptide), especially now that new episodes are a rare and treasured gift (remember the times when it was almost a full-time job to keep up with all your favourite shows?). But M7 makes me particularly happy right now. More than just passing time, I look forward to every single episode. I have even played with the idea of watching them all again right after I finished season 2. Ezra in particular makes me happy. Unless it is Chris who makes me happier. Vin pretty much always makes me happy. Buck can also be very happiness-inducing. But why not tell you what I think about every one of seperately?
Ezra: Ezra makes me always happy, but even more so when he smiles. He has a very nice smile. I also like that he is a gambler, greedy, and generelly gives the impression that he has better (and more profitable) things to do than to hang around with a bunch of gunmen and protect a town ("Dear Mother, these fools are now having me protect a waggon trail..:" or something like it is what he supposedly writes in a letter in "Waggon Trail"). And yet you can swear that he is among the first in line when the bad guys show up and that more often than not, he puts himself in danger for the good of others without having to be forced to do so. He is also really good with a gun.
So what, I have a thing about men with guns and this show lets me indulge in this passion without even trying to be subtle about it.
Chris: Chris makes me happy because he looks really silly when he does not wear a hat. No, seriously, Chris makes me happy because he is such a contradiction. He is the one who wants to settle down , have a wife and kid, and yet he is the one of the seven who is the least ready for that to happen. He is a hero, doing the right thing because it is RIGHT, but at the same time willing to have his own justice, to seek revenge no matter what the law says. He is the alpha without trying to be the alpha. He treats women with respect, and yet he "ain't blind". We've also seen him with a prostitute (more than one, actually), which, no, even I cannot say that that would turn me on, but I just love the thought that he has needs and that the show doesn't turn him into a righteous monch (all Mulder ever had was porn... And Krycek...) He seems to be the most serious about his job as a protector, but he is the first to leave when he isn't wanted anymore. Also, he seesm to have no problem combining drinking (there's an awful lot of casual drinking in this show, you gotta wonder if they are ever sober) and gambling with this job. Yes, he has a dark secret in his past, but he hasn't lost his will to live, love or have fun. Also, he looks good in black.
Vin: Vin makes me happy because...seriously, have you looked at his face? Or, the rest of him? Parts that aren't featured as prominently as they should be but are still presented in a
very...advantageous... way due to the nature of the show (horses. Saddles. Getting up onto said horses. you know what I mean.) Vin seems to be the only one of the seven who does what he does because it is what he wants to do right now. Maybe he doesn't give other options a thought, but with everyone else I think they have plans for a future, a church, a hospital, a saloon, a wife and kids, several wifes, Casey. Vin seems to be the only one who doesn't have that. Which would explain why he was so willing to run off with the horrible woman from the Waggon Trail. Still, I think of him as the heart of the seven. As long as he is there, they won't fall apart.
Buck: Buck makes me happy because he likes women. I like a man who likes women. So much that he is willing to make a fool of himself. Yes, I know that some women would think he isn't honest when he "works" on a women for weeks only to get her to sleep with him, but I think it's the most honest he could be. At least he acknowledges that they are worth the "work". (it makes sense in my twisted brain. Really. But I would have to write a very anti-feminist essay to explain it, and that, unlike the Seven, would not make me happy right now.) Buck is the one of the seven who cares most about the others. I think that's hiw whole problem: he cares too much. He'd be the one who would really mourn if one of them died. For the others it would be just another day in the West. I would love to know more about Buck's past and how he came to know Chris. Buck just seems like he would be fun to be around every day.
Nathan: Nathan makes me happy because...uh...I can't say I care much about Nathan. He is needed because he is the conscience of the seven. I like him, but I can't think of anything that makes me particularly happy about him. I think I'd have more to say if he were nicer to Ezra, but truth is, while I can imagine a night of poker and laughs with all the others, I think mine and Nathan's humour would clash terribly. I'm just not politically correct enough for him. I'm not sure it's politically correct to not care about Nathan very much, but I couldn't care less.
Josiah: Josiah makes me happy because he is different. He is older than the others, he seems to function differently in many ways, and yet there is no doubt that he is a part of them. I admit that I don't get Josiah at all, but even I can imagine coming to him with a problem or if I needed someone to talk to. He is just that kind of person. I appreciate that he is unconventional in so many ways.
JD: JD makes me happy because he is cute. Oh, come on, he is! He is also insecure (but getting better), trying to be like the Big Boys (and getting better) and blind when it comes to Casey (who is adorable), but he gives me hope. Sometimes I think that they are all going to end up being shot down on a dusty main street one day, that this is, in fact, the only end any of them could ever have. Except for JD who will dig for frogs with Casey in his backyard, a bunch of kids and a grandma on the porch. While this idea personally makes me want to run away, fast, it gives me hope that it should be possible for some people. JD would also be ridiculously easy to slash, because he'd practically do anything Buck tells him to do. On the other hand, slashing JD with anyone BUT Buck almost feels like incest. At the very least it would make Chris look like a dirty old man. If JD were going to Hogwarts, he'd have a crush on Snape.
There. That made me happy. I will get back to work now. :-)
